
Gilmore Leads Harvard Past Northeastern In Women's Beanpot Consolation Game, 4-3
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A strong opening to the third period led the Crimson to a 4-3 victory over Northeastern in the Beanpot consolation game on Tuesday night, Feb. 13 at Conte Forum. Freshman Becca Gilmore helped erase a two-goal deficit early in the third, sealing the win for Harvard with the game-tying and game-winning goals. The Crimson improves to 8-3-1 in Beanpot consolation games and is now 12-13-2 overall, 9-9-2 in ECAC play.
The Crimson opened scoring nearly four minutes into the first period when freshman Keely Moy tallied her ninth goal of the season off a feed from Gilmore to give Harvard a 1-0 lead. Northeastern would then go on to earn the next three tallies. The Huskies first evened the score just two minutes after Harvard's goal and added another to take a 2-1 lead late in the first period.
Almost halfway through the second period, Northeastern scored a shorthanded goal to increase its lead to two. Harvard tightened the gap at 9:50 in the second on a goal by Ali Peper with assists from Bradley Fusco and Kaitlin Tse to come back within one. Down 3-2 heading into the third period, the Crimson came out firing, taking a 4-3 lead less than eight minutes into the frame off of Gilmore's back-to-back goals.
Freshman goaltender Becky Dutton picked up her second win of the season, making 20 saves in net and turning away all of Northeastern's shots in the third period. Offensively, Gilmore led the Crimson with seven shots on goal and owned a .615 faceoff percentage. Harvard outshot the Huskies 27-23 including 10-6 in the second period and 10-7 in the third.
Goal Descriptions
- The Crimson struck first at 3:18 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead against the Huskies. Emma Buckles skated the puck up ice from Harvard's blue line to dish it to Becca Gilmore who took it deep in the offensive zone. As Keely Moy charged into the zone, Gilmore fed her the puck as she took it to center ice and fired one through the legs of Aerin Frankel for her ninth goal of the season.
- The Huskies evened the score nearly two minutes later at 5:29 when McKenna Brand worked down low in the Northeastern offensive zone to get control of the puck. Brand sent a pass to the top of the blue line where Tori Sullivan took a shot that went far side, top right corner passed Becky Dutton.
- With just 2:57 remaining in the first period, Northeastern would take its first lead of the game. Brand took the puck from behind the net for an initial wraparound shot that was denied by Dutton. Denisa Krizova came rushing in from the top of the zone to drive home the rebound and give the Huskies the 2-1 lead.
- Northeastern scored its third goal of the night shorthanded at 7:53 of the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Codie Cross flung the puck from deep in the Huskies' defensive zone to Sullivan who skated the puck into Harvard's zone and took a wrist shot that went just above Dutton's right shoulder.
- Harvard answered right back at 9:50 in the second to come within one. Bradley Fusco brought the puck up ice from the faceoff in the Crimson's defensive end and connected with Kaitlin Tse from a pass that wrapped around the boards. Tse then sent a quick pass to Ali Peper who fired a shot from the blue line that snuck just past Frankel's skate in the short side corner.
- The Crimson opened the third period with an equalizer to tie the game at 3-3. Kaitlin Tse fed Becca Gilmore a pass at center ice who then skated the puck up ice into the offensive zone to Kat Hughes. Hughes took a shot from the right circle and Gilmore tipped it passed Frankel to even the score.
- Just two minutes later, Ali Peper took a wrist shot from the blue line that was initially stopped by Frankel. After a scrum in front of the net, Becca Gilmore found the loose puck and drove it home to give the Crimson a 4-3 lead at 7:37 in the third period.
