Boston University Scores Final Five Goals In 7-4 Win Over Harvard In Beanpot Third Place Game
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Down two goals early in the second period, the Boston University women's ice hockey team reeled off the final five goals of the game to post a 7-4 victory over Harvard on Tuesday in the consolation game of the 44th Beanpot at Conte Forum.
Sophomore Christina Vote scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist for the first three-point game of her career. Senior Julia Nearis recorded a goal and an assist while playing in her 100th career game while classmate Nadia Mattivi and a trio of freshmen - Brooke Disher, Sydney Healey and Clara Yuhn - all found the back of the net. Junior Catherine Foulem had three assists to join Vote in setting a career high in points.
Sophomore Callie Shanahan made 24 saves in goal for the Terriers, who move to 11-17-3 on the season.
Shannon Hollands scored two goals for the Crimson, which falls to 7-17-3 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Harvard opened the scoring at 5:33 of the first when Hollands converted from the slot.
- BU got an equalizer at 15:23 when junior Tamara Giaquinto prevented a Harvard clearing attempt, allowing Healey to collect the puck and skate through the right circle before beating Harvard netminder Daisy Boynton.
- The Crimson regained the lead on its first power-play opportunity of the night as Gabi Davidson Adams made it 2-1 with 2:35 left in the opening frame.
- In the second, Harvard pushed its lead to two goals on two occasions before the Terriers dominated the second half of the contest.
- Hollands created a 3-1 advantage at 3:36 of the second but Nearis countered just 19 seconds later when she corralled a feed from junior Clare O'Leary and scored at the top of the crease.
- Anne Bloomer continued the scoring spurt 62 seconds after the Nearis goal to give Harvard a 4-2 advantage.
- Disher, who scored in her Beanpot debut last week, added another tally when she finished off a rush with a perfectly placed shot at 11:16 of the second.
- Harvard allowed the Terriers two power-play chances later on the middle stanza and BU captialized on the latter to make it a 4-4 affair heading into the second intermission.
- Mattivi capped a nifty give-and-go with Nearis from the slot with 53 seconds left in the period to draw the Terriers even.
- BU outshot the Crimson in each period and had a 14-7 advantage in the decisive third period.
- Another give-and-go - this time off an impressive rush - resulted in a tap-in for Vote at the right post on assists from Foulem and Madison Cardaci, giving BU the lead at 11:51 of the third.
- Yuhn registered an impressive insurance goal less than two minutes later as she stole the puck from a Harvard skater and curled around the zone before sniping a tough-angle shot to the back of the net.
- Vote put the finishing touches on the win with an empty-netter with 90 seconds left in regulation.
